Successful Cylinder Overhaul

21st February 2024

Introduction

Working with an international client with locations across the globe, we were requested to inspect multiple subsea lifting and locking cylinders.

The Problem

Our client requested our team to inspect a range of subsea cylinders which had been in operation for several years.

As a routine part of their asset management, it is imperative that the cylinders were inspected and if needed, overhauled, to ensure continued production and zero downtime for their operations.

The Solution

The cylinders were collected from our client’s works and brought to our Sunderland workshop for an initial visual inspection.

Each cylinder was stripped to allow for a more in depth inspection which included:

  • Detailed picture report which resulted in a list of recommendations
  • Supply of new cylinder seal set, piston seals and gland seals. (All seals provided from within R & G Fluid Power Group)
  • Supply of cylinder bearings, hoses, and fittings
  • Overhaul of cylinder locking valve, counterbalance valve, lowering brake valve if applicable
  • Chroming of the cylinder piston rod if applicable
  • New cylinder rods machined from chrome & marine grade stainless steel
  • Honing the cylinder barrel
  • In house repair and machining of cylinder top gland & piston
  • All related shot blasting and painting in line with client specification
  • Full dynamic function testing and pressure testing complete with document pack

Summary

The work carried out ensures that the cylinders are working to their optimum capacity with zero downtime for our client and a proactive approach to their asset management.

If you’re using cylinders in an upcoming project, our recent blog ‘A Guide to Hydraulic Cylinders’ is not to be missed.
