Do you repair or replace?

29th January 2025

The Problem

At Hydraulic & Offshore Supplies Ltd, we take pride in offering reliable servicing and refurbishment for the Marine Oil and Gas Industry. One recent project involved a Danfoss PVG120/32 combination valve assembly that required a full bench test, strip down, and report.

Upon inspection, it was clear that this valve assembly had seen better days. It was covered in dirt, oxidation, corrosion, and scale buildup. To restore this valve to its original condition would require extensive cleaning treatments like shot blasting, abrasive cleaning, and ultrasonic cleaning processes that can be costly and time consuming. However, it was clear that some of the internal components were non-serviceable, which made surface cleaning even more complicated.

In terms of functionality, we found the valve spools had minor wear and discoloration, with several external leaks that were repaired to proceed with the tests. We observed erratic behaviour in the main relief valve’s pressure settings, which could be a sign of wear or damage. Despite this, the electro-hydraulic and friction detent services worked well, and we found no performance issues in the mechanical and electrical control.

The Solution

While the valve functioned adequately under the test conditions, we couldn’t fully replicate the application’s required flow rate. A full restoration would need both cleaning and part replacements, but we asked ourselves the question: Would it be more cost-effective to invest in a new valve assembly instead?

After evaluating the costs of restoring this valve and comparing it to the price of a new one, we provided a quote for a brand-new valve assembly, complete with the necessary parts and RAL colour paint.

Your Benefits: Choosing the best path forward!

  • Cost vs. Value: Refurbishing may seem cost-effective, but the time, effort, and costs often make replacing the system a better investment.
  • Minimised Downtime: Refurbished systems can still have performance issues, while new equipment offers reliability and fewer future failures.
  • Expert Advice: At HOS, we evaluate each situation to help you make the best decision for performance, cost, and long-term reliability.
