Protecting your hose and cables is an essential part of any maintenance programme, in our latest blog we look at the firesleeve product, how it can be used and its benefits.
What is firesleeve?
Firesleeve is commonly used to protect hose and cable assemblies from flame and molten metal splash. The first firesleeve was developed in the early 1970’s as a means of flame protection for hydraulic hose assemblies on military aircraft. It is manufactured from ‘E’ glass fibre yarn knitted to form a sleeve and coated with high-grade silicone elastomer rubber.
What is it used for?
Firesleeve is a very flexible sleeving designed to protect wires, cables, and hoses from high ambient temperatures. It will offer continuous protection at an operating temperature of 260°C and can withstand a molten metal splash at 1200°C.
Why use firesleeve to protect hoses from heat?
Hydraulic systems are widely used in everything from power heavy machinery, robots, automobile brakes, manufacturing equipment, aerospace and marine industries.
Fluids materials, such as oil may break down when exposed to excessive heat in a hydraulic system. When a hose assembly is exposed to extreme high temperature it may be damaged, heat may also lower hydraulic oil viscosity, in turn affecting the lubrication of moving parts and equipment production. Low temperature can disrupt the stability of hydraulic oil.
Protecting your hoses with firesleeve reduces the chance of equipment and component impairment due to excessive heat, firesleeves preserve the integrity of hose assemblies, ensuring proper and continued operation of hydraulic systems.
